Cochiti Lake

Cochiti Lake is a popular recreational area located in Sandoval County, New Mexico. It is situated on the Rio Grande, about 50 miles north of Albuquerque and 20 miles southwest of Santa Fe. The lake was created in the 1970s by the US Army Corps of Engineers for flood control, irrigation, and recreation purposes. Cochiti Lake offers a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, boating, camping, hiking, and picnicking. The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including bass, catfish, and trout, making it a popular spot for anglers. Boaters can launch their watercraft from one of the two boat ramps on the lake. The Cochiti Lake campground offers over 170 campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, and barbecue grills. There are also several group picnic shelters available for reservation. The area has several hiking trails, including the Cochiti Lake Trail, which offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. In addition to its recreational opportunities, Cochiti Lake is also home to the Pueblo de Cochiti, one of the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. The pueblo is located on the north side of the lake and offers visitors a glimpse into the culture and traditions of the Cochiti people.
